Tennessee advances gun rights

According to Jenn Jacques at bearingarms.com, citing The Tennessean:

  • A bill to allow employees at state colleges and universities to carry weapons while on campus advanced in the House and the Senate on Tuesday.
  • The amended bill also included a provision that would offer colleges and universities immunity from any potential legal action in the event of an accidental discharge. That would mean full-time employees who are a valid permit holder could not file a workers’ compensation claim if they shot themselves while on campus.
  • A measure to allow 18-year-olds the ability to carry a weapon was given approval in the Senate Judiciary Committee as well.
  • The committee and the House Civil Justice Committee also passed a bill to lower the fees for a lifetime handgun carry permit from $500 to $200.
  • Also going into effect is a law from the permit holder privacy bill which was passed in 2013. The law will take the names of nearly 400,000 Tennesseans with permits to carry off public record, keeping their guns and their identities concealed.

The usual hand-wringing from the usual groups was brought forth.  Mississippi has allowed guns on campuses by enhanced licensees for several years now.  I am unaware of a single incident where this was a problem despite claims from the then-chief of the Ole Miss police department that there would be “shootouts in the Grove.”

I would love to see Mississippi adopt a lifetime concealed carry license.  Currently our licenses are good for five years and may be renewed by mail every other renewal.
