I question the efficacy of safe storage laws – I do not think they actually work – but no one I know questions the obligation of a gun owner to safely store his/her firearm. Gun owners should do this through personal responsibility rather than government compulsion.
Nevertheless, Tennessee State Sen. Sara Kyle, D-Memphis, is bringing back her “MaKayla’s Law.” If passed, this law would penalize adults who leave weapons out where children can use them to kill or injure other kids. An adult could be convicted of reckless endangerment if they fail to safely secure or lock a firearm which a child under 13 uses to kill or injure another child (Class E felony for injuries, Class C felony if death results).
Kyle has previously introducted MaKayla’s Law through the legislature but failed.
